Turn-by-turn directions

The starting place of the route is Lappeenranta railway station (Lappeenranta’s travel centre).

The route starts along Ratakatu to Lepola’s graveyard, past Kahilanniemi and the Central Hospital towards Myllysaari beach and family park. It is located in the vicinity of Kaupunkilahti. At the park, you will find a children’s playground, beach volleyball courts, an exercise and climbing area, a parkour track and a beach cafe. Excitement can be sought from the private Flowpark adventure park.

From Myllysaari, we cycle along the beach promenade that circulates Kaupunkilahti past the casino to Lappeenranta’s port, where you can sit down at cosy cafes or boat restaurants. At the harbour market, you can but fastfood from Lappeenranta, vety and atomi meat pies, as well as treats from the Martha waffle stand. The sellers will be happy to tell you about the differences between vety and atomi meat pies. The name is determined according to the fillings of the meat pie.

Finland’s largest sandcastle is built every year in the close vicinity of the port, and is open to the admiration of slightly older visitors. Approximately three million kilos of sand are used for building the sandcastle, which can be seen throughout the summer. The theme of the sandcastle changes annually, and alongside the event, there is a variety of free and chargeable entertainment for families with children.

Lappeenranta’s most significant historical site is the Fortress, it is recommended that you make a booking before your visit. The fortress’s museums, exhibitions, restaurants, cafes, events and boutiques entice visitors around the year. The Lappeenranta Fortress is part of the fortress chain built by the Russians at the end of the 1700s to protect St. Petersburg, which are known as the Suvorov fortresses, which are named after Russian General Alexandr Suvorov, who was responsible for their construction. You can get to the fortress along the cobbled street from three directions: Via Viipuriportti when arriving from the city, via Savonlinnanportti when arriving from Saimaa or via Vesiportti when arriving from Kaupunginlahti.

When you leave the fortress, the route takes you along a pleasant beach promenade to Rakuunamäki. The history of Rakuunamäki dates back approximately one hundred years. It was built as the garrison of the Finnish dragoon in 1889. From Rakuunamäki, we descend to the shore of Saimaa, where the route continues along beaches towards Huhtiniemi and Lappeenranta’s camping area. There is a beach in the area. From Huhtiniemi we head towards the airport and the old wooden houses of the beautiful district of Tykki back to the railway station.
